Urinary Incontinence

If you are having recurring urine leaks, you are not alone. Approximately 45% of women report some degree of urinary incontinence (the unintentional release of urine) . Apart from the embarrassment and discomfort, many women suffering from urinary incontinence (UI) have to alter their lifestyles due to the disorder. The urinary system is comprised of several parts that work in unison. However, when 1 or more of those parts malfunction, UI can develop.

There are 4 main categories of urinary incontinence (UI).

  • Stress Urinary Incontinence – sudden “stresses” from coughing, exercising, laughing, and sneezing that cause urine leaks.
  • Urge Incontinence –unexpected and instant urges to urinate that may plague someone at any time of the day, even throughout the night.
  • Mixed Incontinence – arises when multiple symptoms are present (of both urge and stress UI).
  • Overflow Incontinence – this type of UI is marked when the bladder is not emptying properly.

The urinary system can last a lifetime and its malfunction should not be expected with natural aging. In fact, several causes of UI include connective tissue disorders, chronic heavy lifting and straining, menopause, obesity, pregnancy, and other functions that weaken the muscles and ligaments in the pelvis. Las Palmas OB/GYN’s can fully restore your urinary system to its peak condition.

What to Expect

Your OB/GYN will ask a few questions about your symptoms and give you a careful examination. After this assessment, a treatment will be recommended that matches your individual needs. Treatment varies from patient to patient but the main treatment types include behavioral/muscle therapy, biofeedback, bulking agents, nerve stimulation, medications, and the sling procedure. Your OB/GYN will fully explain exactly how they plan to proceed with your UI treatment. All UI treatments are mild and quickly performed. After treatment, you can expect to get back to living a life free of UI.
